Sepsis bundle compliance rose 18% at Mass General after EHR redesign

A two-year study finds that simplifying the order set, not adding alerts, drove the change.

A two-year study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine reports that compliance with the six-step sepsis bundle at Massachusetts General Hospital rose 18 percentage points after the institution redesigned its electronic order set — and that the redesign, rather than additional alerting, accounted for almost all of the gain.

The authors found that bundle compliance climbed from 61% to 79% over the study period, with no measurable increase in inappropriate antibiotic starts.
