California Nurses Association members at Kaiser Permanente succeeded in reversing the planned termination of a DACA-status RN whose work authorization renewal had been delayed, the union said this week.
Kaiser had moved to fire the nurse — a member of one of the CNA-represented bargaining units inside the integrated health system — when Department of Homeland Security renewal paperwork failed to clear before the prior authorization expired. Union representatives intervened, citing the contract’s just-cause protections and the broader pattern of healthcare employers using paperwork lapses to push out immigrant workers.
The nurse remained on the job. CNA did not name the individual.
Roughly 800,000 active DACA recipients live in the United States. Healthcare is one of the sectors most affected: tens of thousands of nurses, physicians, and ancillary staff hold DACA status, and renewal backlogs have intensified in 2026.
